DANVILLE, Ky. (CentreColonels.com) – Centre Director of Athletics and Recreation Brad Fields '98 recently announced the hiring of Jeremy Carlson '15 as the college's first Head Strength and Conditioning Coach.
Carlson assumes his new role after serving as a volunteer assistant coach for the men's soccer program during the 2016 season.
"I am truly excited to accept the position of Head Strength and Conditioning Coach at Centre College," said Carlson. "First, I would like to thank Brad Fields, Andrew Gavin '06 and Gina Nicoletti for implementing this position and believing that I was the right person to fill this role.
Also, I would like to thank Head Men's Soccer Coach Jeb Burch '94. Without his encouragement I would not have had the opportunity to pursue this position, which he knows is a big passion of mine. While it will be hard not to be on the touchline with the Centre men's soccer team this fall, I believe that this move will benefit everyone within the athletic department.
Finally, I cannot wait to get work alongside, Coaches Carter Conley and Jeff Collett. They have both laid a great foundation for the strength and conditioning department, which I am confident we can build on!"
As Head Strength and Conditioning Coach, Carlson will primarily design, implement and supervise sport-specific strength and conditioning programs for all Centre student-athletes. He will work with each sport coach as well as with the athletic training staff to provide the best quality programming for each student-athlete and each sport program.
"The creation of a full-time head strength and conditioning coach will have a profoundly positive impact on the development and growth of our nearly 600 student-athletes," said Fields. "In many ways, this is an area in which we have been lagging behind our peers, and not by lack of effort of those standing in the gaps for us in the past, but it as a structural deficit. Now, I am excited to watch the growth and development of our student-athlete population in this critical area.
Jeremy Carlson is the perfect architect to construct this new position from the ground up. Jeremy is a Centre graduate, a successful student-athlete, someone that is well respected by our Centre community, and has a true passion for the physical development and growth of our students while in college. I'm excited to usher him into this important new role."
Carlson is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) through the National Strength and Conditioning Association. He was responsible for the strength and conditioning schedule for the men's soccer team during the 2016-17 year.
Prior to joining the Centre coaching staff, Carlson worked as the general manager of CrossFit Bellevue in Bellevue, Wash., one of the largest CrossFit gyms in the United States.
A former standout for the Centre men's soccer team, Carlson was named the SAA Defensive Player of the Year as a senior in 2014, anchoring a back line that paced the SAA in goals against average in 2013 and '14. He was a two-time All-Great Lakes Region honoree and a four-time All-SAA selection, garnering First Team honors for three consecutive seasons from 2012-14.
In addition, he was named the Centre Male Athlete of the Year as a senior and a NSCAA Academic All-American.
Carlson is currently pursuing a Master's Degree in Exercise Science with a focus in Performance Enhancement and Injury Prevention from California University of Pennsylvania.
