Keeping up with the Colonels is your one-stop spot to catch up with any of the Centre Athletics action you may have missed from the past week and look ahead to the next week. This week we look back at a wild weekend of basketball and the debut of several of Centre's spring sports teams.
The Centre baseball team began the 2018 campaign with a 1-2 record after opening the season at tenth-ranked LaGrange. Junior Drew Schacht hit .500 in the series, going 6-12 at the plate and scoring a run in each of the three games while also recording a save in Centre's 8-6 victory over the Panthers on Friday. The Colonels lost the second game of Friday's doubleheader 5-4 after losing a late lead and then fell in Saturday's rubber match by a score of 9-1.
MEN'S BASKETBALL (16-7, 11-2 SAA)
The Colonels clinched a share of the SAA regular season title with two more wins this past weekend. Centre shot 50 percent from three-point range in dismantling Berry 95-66 on Friday night. On Sunday against Oglethorpe, the Colonels rode the hot shooting of Tucker Sine to a 20-point lead before holding on for a dramatic 70-67 victory. The win was the eighth in a row for Centre, who has now won 12 of the last 13 games on the year, setting up for Saturday's contest against Sewanee where the winner will determine who is the top seed in next week's SAA Tournament.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL (14-9, 5-8 SAA)
The Centre women's basketball team split their final home doubleheader of the season. The Colonels donned their pink uniforms against Berry for the annual Pink Night game, with proceeds from T-shirt sales going towards the Play 4 Kay Foundation for breast cancer research. Centre had a dominant defensive performance against the Vikings, winning 62-40 as Olivia Schad went a perfect 4-4 from long distance. On Sunday, SAA regular season champion Oglethorpe pulled away from the Colonels for a 65-52 win.
MEN'S LACROSSE (1-0)
Centre men's lacrosse got its 2018 season off to a dramatic start with a 5-4 victory over Piedmont on Saturday at Farris Stadium. Trailing 4-3 in the closing minutes, Dominic Nayan tied the score with 89 seconds remaining and then after a key turnover, freshman Jack Shannon found the back of the net with one second remaining to put the Colonels on top. Senior Ross McClellan was named the SAA Defensive Player of the Week after forcing three turnovers, including the last one with 49 seconds to go that gave the Colonels their final possession, which eventually led to Shannon's game winner.
MEN'S TRACK & FIELD
The indoor track season began for the Colonels at the DePauw Indoor Invitational on Saturday. The Colonels brought a partial squad to the event and finished seventh out of 14 teams. The top performance for the Colonels on the men's side belonged to William Blackford, who won the triple jump at 42-00.75 and finished second in the long jump with a mark of 20-03.00.
WOMEN'S TRACK & FIELD
The Centre women also began the season at the DePauw Indoor Invitational on Saturday and like the men's team, the Colonels traveled with a partial squad, finishing eighth out of a dozen teams.
