Briese Era Begins with @CentreBaseball Doubleheader Sweep of Coast Guard

EMERSON, Ga. (CentreColonels.com) – The Centre baseball team opened the 2017 campaign on Saturday afternoon with a pair of victories over Coast Guard at Perfect Game USA in Emerson, Ga. The Colonels earned triumphs of 23-3 and 8-2 over the Bears, marking the first career victories for first-year head coach Drew Briese.

 

Game One: Centre 23, Coast Guard 3

Centre (2-0) exploded for 23 runs with 19 base hits in the first game of the doubleheader paced by freshman first baseman Seth Hagan's (Goshen, Ky.) 4-for-4 performance at the plate. Hagan finished with a home run, five RBI, three runs and a walk to lead the Colonels at the plate.

Sophomore Drew Schacht (Lexington, Ky.) picked up right where he left off as the Southern Athletic Association (SAA) Newcomer of the Year last season, going 4-for-5 with a pair of RBI, four runs scored and a walk for Centre.

Freshman third baseman Matt LaPoint (Freeport, Maine) was 3-for-4 with a double, four RBI, four runs and a pair of walks in his collegiate debut, while sophomore designated hitter Mason Falbo (Mississauga, Ontario) went 2-for-3 at the dish with three RBI and two runs scored for the Colonels.

Senior left fielder Alex Richardson (Mount Washington, Ky.) (1-for-3) belted a two-run triple to center field and also scored two runs to go with a walk in the game.

Freshman second baseman Parker Selin (Lexington, Ky.) went 1-for-3 at the plate with two RBI, a run scored and a walk.

Centre tallied its most base hits (19) since the Colonels finished with 20 hits in a 13-12 win over Sewanee on April 5, 2009.

Senior pitcher Trevor Brewer (Bowling Green, Ky.) took the hill for Centre, earning the win for the Colonels by tossing five innings and allowing three runs (one earned) on two hits. Brewer fanned five batters and walked just one in the victory.

Senior Lucas McAvoy (Lexington, Ky.) and junior Mark Dill (Lexington, Ky.) each hurled a scoreless frame for Centre, as well.

Game Two: Centre 8, Coast Guard 2
 
In the nightcap, the Colonels got on the board first in the top of the fourth inning with sophomore catcher Cameron Duggins' (Knoxville, Tenn.) RBI infield single.
Coast Guard knotted the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the sixth frame before taking a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the seventh.
In the top of the eighth inning, Hagan's RBI single to left field scored LaPoint and evened the contest at 2-2. Later in the stanza, Duggins would use another RBI single to put Centre on top 3-2, before sophomore shortstop Brahm Whittinghill (Sellersburg, Ind.) connected on a two-run single to left field to push the Colonels' advantage to 5-2.
Next inning, freshman right fielder Will Kirk (Morgantown, N.C.) hit a two-run double to left field in his first career at-bat before scoring on an error by the Bears, extending Centre's edge to 8-2.
Hagan led the Colonel offense again, going 3-for-4 with a run batted in and three runs scored.
Duggins finished 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI.
Junior pitcher Aaron Scilley (Maysville, Ky.) picked up his first collegiate win for Centre with two innings of relief, allowing one run on two hits.
Schacht started the game on the mound for the Colonels, hurling six innings and allowing one run on four hits with four strikeouts and a pair of walks.
Senior pitcher Jordan Short (Neon, Ky.) chipped in a scoreless frame of relief to close out the triumph for Centre.
The Colonels close the three-game series against the Bears tomorrow, Sunday, Feb. 19 at noon ET in Emerson, Ga.
