Colonels Blank Coast Guard 8-0 to Earn Series Sweep
EMERSON, Ga. (CentreColonels.com) – The Centre baseball team posted an 8-0 shutout victory over Coast Guard on Sunday afternoon at the Perfect Game at Lakepoint Complex to pick up a three-game sweep of the Bears to open the 2017 campaign.
The Colonels (3-0) outscored Coast Guard (0-3) by a combined score of 39-5 in the wins, batting .354 on the weekend while compiling a total of 40 base hits.
The Centre pitching staff limited the Bears to hit .187 in the three games, allowing just three earned runs on 17 hits with 17 strikeouts and six walks.
On Sunday, the Colonels broke the game open with five runs in the third frame, as senior left fielder Alex Richardson (Mt. Washington, Ky.) singled to right field to score a run, before a Coast Guard error allowed two more Centre runners to score. Designated hitter Mason Falbo (Mississauga, Ontario) then plated Richardson on a fielder's choice followed by an RBI single to center field by freshman second baseman Parker Selin (Lexington, Ky.).
In the top of the sixth inning, senior second baseman Andrew Olson's (Louisville, Ky.) run-scoring single to right field pushed the Colonels' advantage to 6-0, followed by an RBI groundout by Richardson to extend the margin to 7-0.
Next inning, Centre tacked on another run when Falbo stole home on the double steal as Selin also swiped second on the play.
Falbo finished 2-for-4 at the plate with a double, RBI and two runs scored, while Richardson was 1-for-4 on the day with two RBI and a run.
Sophomore catcher Cameron Duggins (Knoxville, Tenn.) posted a 2-for-3 showing with a double and a pair of runs scored for the Colonels.
Sophomore pitcher Nick Hoffman (Louisville, Ky.) picked up the win on the bump for Centre with five shutout innings of work, allowing just four base hits with five strikeouts and three walks.
Sophomore pitchers Sam Shelley (Lexington, Ky.) and Aaryn Chandler (St. John, Ind.) along with senior pitcher Alex Edwards (Goshen, Ohio) combined to toss four innings of scoreless relief, fanning a total of three batters and allowing just two hits.
The Colonels open the home portion of the 2017 campaign hosting Defiance in a three-game series beginning next Saturday, Feb. 25 at 2 p.m. ET at Gary Wright Field. Centre swept a doubleheader from the Yellow Jackets last season.
