DANVILLE, Ky. (CentreColonels.com) – The Centre baseball team picked up its second consecutive series sweep with a 14-4 triumph over visiting Defiance on Sunday afternoon at Gary Wright Field. The Colonels, off to their best start since the 1992 season at 6-0, defeated the Yellow Jackets (0-3) by scores of 10-6 and 6-1 on Saturday.
Defiance struck first with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth inning, before Centre answered with two in the bottom of the frame as sophomore center fielder Wesley Jorette (Lawrenceburg, Ky.) drove in senior left fielder Alex Richardson (Mt. Washington, Ky.) with an RBI single and sophomore catcher Cameron Duggins (Knoxville, Tenn.) plated sophomore designated hitter Mason Falbo (Mississauga, Ontario) on a groundout.
In the sixth, Tyler Weaver gave the Yellow Jackets a 4-2 edge with a two-run single down the left field line.
The Colonels would respond with a big sixth inning, crossing the plate nine times to gain an 11-4 advantage. Centre capitalized on five Defiance walks in the inning, while Duggins and Richardson each hit RBI singles in the stanza. In addition, Falbo tripled in the inning, scoring freshman first baseman Seth Hagan (Goshen, Ky.) from first base before scoring on a Yellow Jackets throwing error.
The Colonels capped the game by tacking on three more runs in the seventh, as freshman shortstop Parker Selin (Lexington, Ky.) connected on a two-run double before freshman pinch hitter Dunning Weed's (St. Augustine, Fla.) single down the left field line scored Selin to close out the win for Centre.
Richardson finished 2-for-4 at the plate with an RBI, a run scored and stolen base, while Selin went 1-for-4 with a double, three RBI and a run. Duggins was 1-for-2 on the day with two RBI and a run, and sophomore third baseman Brahm Whittinghill (Sellersburg, Ind.) went 1-for-2 with an RBI, two runs and a pair of walks.
Senior pitcher Alex Edwards (Goshen, Ohio) picked up the win on the mound for the Colonels, tossing an inning of relief and allowing two runs and one base hit.
Sophomore hurler Nick Hoffman (Louisville, Ky.) started the game on the hill for Centre, allowing two runs (none earned) on four hits with six strikeouts and three walks across five innings of work.
Sophomore pitcher Aaryn Chandler (St. John, Ind.) added a scoreless frame of relief, fanning three batters and limiting the Yellow Jackets to one hit.
The Colonels will head to the west coast next weekend, taking on Whitman at Safeco Field in Seattle, Wash., home of the Seattle Mariners in a pair of doubleheaders on March 4-5. The Blues come into the series with a 6-4 ledger on the season.
