Colonels Cap Seattle Series with Doubleheader Split
SEATTLE (CentreColonels.com) - The Centre baseball team closed out its west coast trip to Seattle with another doubleheader split against Whitman on Sunday in the 2017 Bug Kight Memorial Series at Safeco Field, home of Major League Baseball's Seattle Mariners.
The Colonels return to the Bluegrass State with an 8-2 overall ledger heading into next weekend's Southern Athletic Association (SAA) series at Berry. A doubleheader with the Vikings is slated to start next Saturday, March 11 at 1 p.m. ET. The Blues move to 8-6 on the season.
Game One - Centre 10, Whitman 7
Centre jumped out to a 6-0 lead with three runs apiece in the second and third innings. The Colonels were facing Whitman freshman pitcher Eric Ma, who was coming off a no-hitter in the Blues' 2-0 win over Whitworth last weekend.
Freshman Will Kirk's (Morgantown, N.C.) safety squeeze sacrifice bunt got the Colonels on the board in the second frame followed by an RBI double down the left field line by sophomore catcher Cameron Duggins (Knoxville, Tenn.) and a Brahm Whittinghill (Sellersburg, Ind.) RBI single up the middle.
In the third inning, Kirk tripled to left center field scoring two runs before Duggins plated another run for Centre with a single to center field.
Whitman answered with a run in the bottom of the inning, but the Colonels responded with another score in the top of the fourth when sophomore right fielder Drew Schacht (Lexington, Ky.) scored on a wild pitch to put Centre on top 7-1.
The Blues would battle back with four runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth to knot the game up at 7-7.
However, the Colonels would take the lead for good with a run in the sixth before tacking on a run in the seventh on a Duggins RBI double to right field and a Duggins sacrifice fly in the final inning.
Duggins paced Centre at the plate going 3-for-4 with four RBI, a pair of doubles and a run scored while Kirk was 2-for-3 with three RBI, a triple and a run scored.
Freshman second baseman Parker Selin (Lexington, Ky.) was 2-for-4 with three runs scored in the game. Schacht went 2-for-4 with a run, as well.
Senior pitcher Jordan Short (Neon, Ky.) earned the win on the mound for the Colonels, scattering two hits across 4.1 scoreless innings of relief with four strikeouts and a walk.
Game Two - Whitman 11, Centre 5
In the nightcap of the doubleheader, Centre struck first in the third stanza when Schacht plated Whittinghill on an RBI groundout.
After the Blues answered with three runs in the home half of the inning, the Colonels answered with a three-run fourth frame on a Schacht RBI double to left center field and a two-run single by Selin to the same spot.
Whitman would take the lead for good in the bottom of the fourth, plating five runs to gain an 8-4 advantage.
Centre cut into the deficit in the sixth inning when Selin's RBI single scored Whittinghill, but the Blues tacked on two more runs in the closing frames to earn the 11-5 win to close out the weekend series.
Selin led the Colonel offense with a 2-for-4 showing with three RBI while Schacht went 2-for-4 with two RBI, a double and run scored.
Sophomore pitcher Sam Shelley (Lexington, Ky.) was tagged with the loss for Centre, allowing eight runs (six earned) on six hits with a pair of strikeouts and three walks in 3.2 innings of work.
Senior pitcher Alex Edwards (Goshen, Ohio) contributed 2.1 frames of scoreless relief, fanning four batters while walking none.
