@CentreBaseball Opens SAA Play with Twinbill Split at Berry

MT. BERRY, Ga. (CentreColonels.com) – The Centre baseball team opened Southern Athletic Association (SAA) action on Saturday afternoon, splitting a doubleheader at Berry, blanking the Vikings 3-0 in game one before dropping a 7-3 decision in game two at William R. Bowdoin Field.

The Colonels move to 9-3 overall and 1-1 in conference play, while Berry moves to 10-7 and 2-3, respectively.

Game One – Centre 3, Berry 0

Freshman second baseman Parker Selin (Lexington, Ky.) went 4-for-5 with a pair of RBI while senior pitcher Trevor Brewer (Bowling Green, Ky.) pitched six scoreless innings, limiting the Vikings to five hits with three strikeouts to help Centre to a 3-0 victory.

A pitcher's duel for most of the afternoon, Selin's run-scoring single in the third inning put Centre up 1-0. It was not until the eighth inning when the next run was scored, as sophomore right fielder Drew Schacht (Lexington, Ky.) crossed the plate on a Berry fielding error.

The Colonels added an insurance run in the ninth frame when Selin's bunt single scored sophomore shortstop Brahm Whittinghill (Sellersburg, Ind.).

Senior pitcher Jordan Short (Neon, Ky.) earned his second save of the season, stranding two Vikings runners and fanning one batter to close the contest for Centre.

Junior pitcher Aaron Scilley (Maysville, Ky.) added 2.1 innings of scoreless relief.

Schacht finished 2-for-4 with a run scored and a walk.

Game Two – Berry 7, Centre 3

The Colonels struck first in the top of the first stanza when Schacht scored on a Berry wild pitch.

The Vikings would gain a 6-1 lead with a pair of scores in the second and four more runs in the third, before Centre responded with a two-run double by sophomore center fielder Wesley Jorette (Lawrenceburg, Ky.) in the fourth which minimized the deficit to 6-3.

Berry added a run in the bottom of the inning on a wild pitch.

Jorette went 2-for-3 with two RBI to lead the Colonels at the plate.

Schacht (1-2) suffered the loss on the hill for Centre, allowing seven runs (five earned) on nine hits in five innings of work. Sophomore pitcher Aaryn Chandler (St. John, Ind.) hurled a scoreless inning of relief for the Colonels.

Centre and Berry square off in the series rubber match tomorrow at noon ET.
