Colonels Downed by Berry in Series Finale
MT. BERRY, Ga. (CentreColonels.com) – The Centre baseball team dropped a 5-0 decision to Berry in the teams' Southern Athletic Association (SAA) series finale on Sunday afternoon at William R. Bowdoin Field.
The Colonels fall to 9-4 overall and 1-2 in SAA action, while the Vikings boost their records to 11-7 on the season and 3-3 in league play.
Berry got on the board in the first inning on an RBI single to right field by Casey Whitaker before the Vikings extended its lead to two on a balk in the second inning.
Centre threatened with the bases loaded in the fourth inning after sophomore catcher Cameron Duggins (Knoxville, Tenn.) led off the stanza with a single followed by walks by sophomore right fielder Drew Schacht (Lexington, Ky.) and freshman second baseman Parker Selin (Lexington, Ky.), but Berry pitcher J.T. Eggert was able to get out of the jam with back-to-back groundouts to close the inning.
The Vikings extended their advantage in the fourth frame with a Slade Dale RBI single followed by a Dale sacrifice fly in the sixth inning to push the Berry edge to 4-0.
The hosts would tack on another run in the eighth inning on a Colonel error.
Eggert earned the win, tossing five scoreless innings and limiting Centre to one hit with four strikeouts and five walks.
Sophomore pitcher Nick Hoffman (Louisville, Ky.) was tagged with the loss for the Colonels, allowing three runs on five hits with four walks in four innings of work.
Senior pitcher Alex Edwards (Goshen, Ohio) contributed three innings of relief, allowing one unearned run on four hits with a strikeout and a walk.
Centre faces intrastate foe Berea on the road on Tuesday, March 14 at 6 p.m. ET.
