ATLANTA (CentreColonels.com) – The Centre baseball team traveled to Oglethorpe for the first two of a three-game weekend series against the Stormy Petrels. Centre's inability to drive in runners in scoring position proved costly as Centre lost 9-2 in game 1 and 8-0 in game 2.

Senior Trevor Brewer (Bowling Green, Ky.) pitched out of a jam in the first inning of the first game, but the Petrels got to Brewer in the second with a pair of runs. Centre got on the board in the third inning when senior Alex Richardson (Mount Washington, Ky.) drove in freshman Matt Lapoint (Freeport, Maine) with a base hit, but with runners on second and third and one out after Richardson's RBI, the Colonels were unable to take advantage and the Petrels stayed ahead 2-1.

Oglethorpe scored four runs in the fourth inning as Jarvis Miller drove in a pair with a single and then Bobby Rezac homered in the next at bat. The Petrels tacked on another run after a Centre error in the fifth as Centre again could not get runners home after the first two hitters reached on errors.

Centre cut the lead to 7-2 when freshman Seth Hagan (Goshen, Ky.) doubled, advanced to third on an Oglethorpe wild pitch and then scored on an RBI groundout by freshman Parker Selin (Lexington, Ky.). The Petrels responded with two more runs in the eighth on a base hit from Brandon Fish, and although the Colonels loaded the bases in the ninth with one out, Oglethorpe retired the next two batters on strikeouts to end the game.

Sophomore Drew Schacht (Lexington, Ky.) went 2-4 with a walk for the Colonels.

Oglethorpe's Matt Davis struck out nine batters to pick up the win.

The second game began similarly to the ending of the first game as the Colonels put a pair of runners on with one out but could not drive either of them home. A Centre error started a two-out Oglethorpe rally in the second that eventually resulted in four unearned runs, including a steal of home by Sam Held.

In the fourth inning, Centre loaded the bases with one out, but Hagan was thrown out at the plate on a double play to end the threat. Schacht settled down after the second inning but the Petrels made another two-out rally in the fifth as Adrian Celata hit a two-run homer and Sam Held drove in two more with a base hit. The Colonels drew a pair of walks in the seventh inning but once again struck out in their final two trips to the plate to end the game.

Lapoint went 2-for-2 for the Colonels, while senior Alex Edwards (Goshen, Ohio) worked an inning and a third of hitless relief.

Kyle Babb went the distance on the mound for the Petrels, finishing with eight strikeouts.

The third game in the Centre-Oglethorpe weekend series is slated for a 1:00 PM first pitch on Sunday afternoon.
