ATLANTA (CentreColonels.com) – In an error plagued contest, the Centre baseball team held a 9-5 lead in the seventh inning against Oglethorpe at Anderson Field, but the Colonels were unable to hold onto the lead, falling by a score of 10-9.
The Colonels, who struggled at the plate in their losses to the Petrels on Saturday, took advantage of a pair of errors and a hit by pitch in the first inning. Sophomore Drew Schacht (Lexington, Ky.), who went 5-for-5 from the plate on Sunday, scored on an Oglethorpe error and then sophomore Cameron Duggins (Knoxville, Tenn.) drew a bases loaded walk to score freshman Seth Hagan (Goshen, Ky.) and put Centre up 2-0.
In the bottom half of the inning it would be Oglethorpe's turn to capitalize on an error as Brandon Fish scored an unearned run. Another Centre error in the third inning helped the Petrels take the lead at 3-2 on a Matt Motz double.
Freshman Matt LaPoint walked in the top of the fourth, then stole second and scored on the second hit of the day from Schacht as the Colonels tied the score at 3-3. Oglethorpe retook the lead in the fifth on a two-run homer from Andrew Mink, but the Colonels responded in a big way.
Senior Andrew Olson (Louisville, Ky.) reached on an error and advanced to third on a base hit by LaPoint. After a pitching change, another Oglethorpe error allowed freshman Will Kirk (Morgantown, N.C.) to reach and Olson to score. Schacht loaded the bases after a bunt single and then LaPoint scored when Hagan was hit by a pitch. The Colonels scored their third run of the inning when senior Trevor Brewer (Bowling Green, Ky.) drew a bases loaded walk. Freshman Parker Selin (Lexington, Ky.) brought in Schacht with an RBI single. Finally Olson, batting for the second time in the inning, drew another walk with the bases full and the Colonels had scored five runs in the top of the sixth inning to take an 8-5 lead.
Centre tacked on another run in the seventh as Hagan scorched a triple down the left field line and Brewer brought him home with a base hit. Oglethorpe fought back with four runs in the seventh to tie the game as Sam Held drove in two runs with a clutch two-out single.
In the eighth inning, Centre got in a jam after another error and a hit by pitch and Oglethorpe slugger Adrian Celata took advantage with a base hit that brought in Jarvis Miller for the go-ahead run. Senior Jordan Short (Neon, Ky.) was called on in relief with the bases loaded and stuck out a pair of Petrels to avoid further damage.
Schacht connected on his fifth hit of the game in the ninth with two outs but Hagan grounded out to end the ballgame.
Centre and Oglethorpe each had four errors in the game, which featured ten unearned runs between the two teams.
The Colonels struck out 11 batters in the game. Starter Nick Hoffman (Louisville, Ky.) had a game high five K's, while relievers Aaron Scilley (Maysville, Ky.), Aaryn Chandler (St. John, Ind.) and Jordan Short each had two.
Centre baseball will be back on the road with a pair of midweek non-conference games, traveling to Berea on Tuesday and Maryville (Tenn.) on Wednesday. The Colonels defeated Maryville 3-2 at home last week.
