Colonels Bested by Berea 8-7 in Non-conference Action

BEREA, Ky. (CentreColonels.com) - The Centre baseball team fell by a score of 8-7 to host Berea in a non-conference matchup on Tuesday night at the Berea College Sports Complex. The Colonels move to 14-12 on the season while the Mountaineers improve to 10-16.

With Berea holding a 2-1 advangtage after two frames, Centre knotted up the score at 2-2 in the third when senior Trevor Brewer (Bowling Green, Ky.) singled to right field, plating sophomore right fielder Drew Schacht (Lexington, Ky.).

The Colonels would take the lead in the fourth when freshman third baseman Matt LaPoint (Freeport, Maine) brought home a run with a groundout to the shortstop.

Centre added two more runs in the fifth stanza with an RBI double by freshman left fielder Dunning Weed (St. Augustine, Fla.) and a run-scoring single through the left side by freshman shortstop Parker Selin (Lexington, Ky.).

The Mountaineers answered with a run in the home half of the fifth when Ron Overstreet stole home for Berea, shrinking the Centre lead to 6-4.

Berea would take the lead with a big three-run seventh inning with the help of a two-run double by Caleb Gupton.

In the top of the eighth inning, the Colonels tied up the game once again when freshman center fielder Will Kirk (Morgantown, N.C.) connected on an RBI single up the middle.

With neither team being able to plate a run in the ninth, the game was sent into extra innings, which saw Ryan Blevens drive in the winning run for the Mountaineers in the bottom half of the frame.

Centre finished with double-figure hits for the seventh time this season and second game in a row.

Kirk finished 2-for-4 at the plate with an RBI and a run scored. Sophomore catcher Cameron Duggins (Knoxville, Tenn.) went 2-for-5 with a pair of doubles and a run, while Schacht was 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored.

Senior Jordan Short (Neon, Ky.) suffered his first loss of the season (1-1), hurling three innings of relief for the Colonels and allowing a run on two hits while fanning two hitters.

Sophomore Sam Shelley (Lexington, Ky.) started on the mound for Centre, allowing seven runs (five earned) on 11 hits with a career-high nine strikeouts and four walks. Shelley's nine strikeouts are the most for a Colonel pitcher this season and the most since Rob Caudill fanned 13 batters against Millsaps on March 11, 2016.

Blevens paced the Berea offense going 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs.

Joshua Durbin (2-1) picked up the win for the Mountaineers pitching a scoreless tenth frame, allowing a hit with two strikeouts and a walk.

Centre is back in action on Wednesday traveling to Maryville (Tenn.) for another non-conference game at 4pm ET. The Colonels topped the Scots 3-2 last week at Gary Wright Field.
