DANVILLE, Ky. (CentreColonels.com) – The Centre baseball team was downed by visiting Hendrix in a Southern Athletic Association (SAA) twinbill on Saturday afternoon, dropping decisions of 7-6 and 6-3 to the Warriors at Gary Wright Field.
The Colonels even their record at 14-14 on the year while moving to 4-10 in SAA action, while Hendrix improves to 13-17 overall and 7-7 in conference play.
Centre will look to snap its six-game skid with the series finale against the Warriors on Sunday at noon ET in Danville.
Game One: Hendrix 7, Centre 6
The Colonels jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning with RBI doubles from senior first baseman Greyson Evans (Kernersville, N.C.) and sophomore designated hitter Mason Falbo (Mississauga, Ontario).
Hendrix knotted the game at 2-2 with runs in the second and fifth frames, before Evans scored on a Warriors error in the home half of the fifth to give Centre a 3-2 advantage.
However, Hendrix would take the lead for good in the sixth inning when Wyatt Hogan belted a two-run home run over the left field fence to put the Warriors on top 4-3. Hendrix would add to its edge in the seventh with a Hogan RBI groundout and a two-run single by James Martin.
Centre would rally in the bottom of the seventh inning, plating three runs to shrink the Warriors' lead to 7-6. Senior second baseman Andrew Olson (Louisville, Ky.) brought home a run with a single before freshman Dunning Weed's (St. Augustine, Fla.) pinch-hit RBI groundout and freshman left fielder Will Kirk's (Morgantown, N.C.) run-scoring single to left field brough the Colonels within one run.
Centre threatened with a pair of base runners in the bottom of the ninth on two walks, but the Hendrix bullpen was able to close out the win.
Evans (2-for-5) and sophomore catcher Cameron Duggins (Knoxville, Tenn.) paced the Colonel offense in the contest.
Junior pitcher Aaron Scilley (Maysville, Ky.) suffered his first loss of the season (4-1) in the game, allowing three runs on four hits in an inning of relief.
Senior Trevor Brewer (Bowling Green, Ky.) started the game on the mound for Centre, hurling five innings and allowing two runs on five hits.
Game Two: Hendrix 6, Centre 3
The Warriors built a 6-0 lead through the first five innings of play before the Colonels got on the board in the bottom of the fifth when sophomore center fielder Wesley Jorette (Lawrenceburg, Ky.) connected on an RBI double down the left field line and freshman third baseman Matt LaPoint (Freeport, Maine) plated a run with a single to right field to minimize the deficit to 6-2.
Trailing by four heading into the final frame, Centre loaded the bases with no outs in the inning after three straight singles by Olson, Jorette and Brewer.
A sacrifice fly by Kirk brought home Olson to cut the Hendrix advantage to 6-3, but Colin Brown would force a double play on a line drive to seal the win for the Warriors.
Evans, Duggins and Jorette each went 2-for-3 in the game for the Colonels.
Sophomore Drew Schacht (Lexington, Ky.) was tagged with the loss for Centre, allowing six runs on seven hits with three strikeouts and two walks in 4.1 innings of work. Senior Alex Edwards (Goshen, Ohio) tossed 2.2 innings of scoreless relief for the Colonels, limiting Hendrix to just one hit with a couple of strikeouts.
