@CentreBaseball Drops Series Opener to Rhodes
MEMPHIS (CentreColonels.com) – Torrential rains delayed the start of the scheduled baseball doubleheader between Centre and Rhodes by nearly three hours. The teams agreed to reschedule the second game of Saturday's doubleheader to Sunday and played one game today as Rhodes beat Centre by the score of 6-0.
The Lynx opened up the scoring in the second inning when Nick Bosma connected on a solo home run down the left field line. The Colonels' first scoring threat came in the third inning when sophomore Wesley Jorette (Lawrenceburg, Ky.) drew a leadoff walk, was sacrificed to second and stole third with one half, but Rhodes starter Blake Glauben recorded a pair of strikeouts to snuff out the threat.
Starting pitcher Trevor Brewer (Bowling Green, Ky.) held the Lynx at bay after the Bosma homer until the fifth inning when Rhodes scored four times, including on a double steal and a two-run double by Bill Munson.
Centre looked to rally in the sixth when senior Andrew Olson (Louisville, Ky.) walked and freshman Matt LaPoint (Freeport, Maine) was hit by a pitch, but again the Colonels could not advance the runners. The Lynx added an insurance run in the seventh when Bennett Notestine hit a solo home run to right field and make it 6-0.
One last attempted rally came in the top of the eighth inning when Jorette walked and Olson reached on an error but Glauben once again put out the fire, recording his 11th strikeout for the final out of the game and closed out the contest without allowing a hit.
Centre will look to rebound on Sunday for the final two games of their series against Rhodes and their conference slate for 2017.
