Colonels Split SAA Twinbill at Rhodes
MEMPHIS (CentreColonels.com) – The Centre baseball team earned a doubleheader split on Sunday in the Colonels' final Southern Athletic Association (SAA) matchups of the season, topping Rhodes by a score of 6-4 in game one before dropping a 2-1 decision to the host Lynx in the nightcap at Stauffer Field.
The Colonels move to 17-19 on the season with a 6-15 mark in SAA play, while Rhodes improves to 21-18 and 13-8, respectively.
Centre will head to top-seeded Birmingham Southern for the SAA Tournament next weekend. The fourth-ranked Panthers will also host Berry and Sewanee at the double-elimination pod which begins Friday, April 28.
The Colonels cap the regular season with a non-conference matchup at Berea on Tuesday.
Centre extended its lead to 4-0 in the second frame when Evans used an infield single to score freshman center fielder Will Kirk (Morgantown, N.C.).
Rhodes responded with a three-run second inning, but the Colonels would get one back in the fourth when Falbo's single up the middle plated Kirk giving Centre a 5-3 edge.
The Colonels added another run in the seventh on an RBI single through the right side by Evans.
In the bottom of the ninth inning, Rhodes used three straight singles to load the bases before a fourth consecutive base hit plated a run for the Lynx to cut the Centre lead to 6-4. However, sophomore Drew Schacht (Lexington, Ky.) fanned a batter and forced a Rhodes popup to close out the win for the Colonels.
Evans finished 3-for-4 with a double and three RBI for Centre, while Falbo went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. Kirk was 1-for-1 at the plate with three walks and four runs scored for the Colonels.
Sophomore right-hander Nick Hoffman (Louisville, Ky.) earned the win for Centre to improve to 4-2 on the season, hurling six innings and allowing two earned runs on six hits with four strikeouts and three walks.
Schacht picked up his second save of the year allowing a run on four hits in the final inning of action.
Senior pitcher Alex Edwards (Goshen, Ohio) added two innings of scoreless relief, limiting the Lynx to one hit with one strikeout.
Game Two: Rhodes 2, Centre 1
After four scoreless frames, the Colonels got on the board first once again, this time in the top of the fifth when Falbo brought home freshman baseman Zach McKinney (Elizabethtown, Ky.) with an RBI single to left field.
Rhodes responded in the home half of the inning as Nick Williams' two-run single put the Lynx ahead 2-1.
Centre had runners in scoring position in each of the final two innings, but the Colonels could not push any runs across as Rhodes held on for the series win.
Falbo went 1-for-4 with an RBI to finish with three RBI on the day.
Senior pitcher Jordan Short (Neon, Ky.) was tagged with the loss despite a strong outing, allowing two runs on four hits with three strikeouts and no walks in five frames of work. Short did not surrender an extra-base hit in the contest. Sophomore Aaryn Chandler (St. John, Ind.) threw a scoreless inning of relief for the Colonels, as well.
