Colonels Cap Regular Season with Split at Berea
BEREA, Ky. (CentreColonels.com) - The Centre baseball team closed out the 2017 regular season on Tuesday night with a doubleheader split on the road at Berea, topping the Mountaineers 6-4 in 10 innings in the first game before dropping a 5-3 decision to the hosts in the nightcap. The Colonels finish the regular season with an 18-20 ledger while Berea moves to 14-24.
Centre opens the Southern Athletic Association (SAA) Tournament on Friday, April 28 at 4:30pm CT at third-ranked Birmingham-Southern.
Game One (10 innings) Centre 6, Berea 4
The Colonels plated four runs in the top of the 10th inning en route to the 6-4 triumph.
Trailing 2-0 in the top of the seventh frame, senior Trevor Brewer (Bowling Green, Ky.) hit a pinch-hit two-run double to knot the game at 2-2.
Sophomore Drew Schacht (Lexington, Ky.) then took over on the mound for Centre, tossing three shutout innings to keep the score all tied up at 2-2 in extras.
In the top of the 10th, the Colonels took their first lead of the game when freshman Dunning Weed (St. Augustine, Fla.) walked with the bases loaded, scoring classmate Reed Thomas (Birmingham, Ala.), who led off the inning with a single.
Later in the stanza, freshman Will Kirk (Morgantown, N.C.) scored on a wild pitch before senior Greyson Evans (Kernersville, N.C.) connected on a two-run double to center field, giving Centre a 6-2 advantage.
Berea would shrink the lead to 6-4 with a pair of runs in the home half of the 10th, but senior Lucas McAvoy's (Lexington, Ky.) shut the door on the Mountaineers, earning his first career save in 2/3 of an inning of work with one strikeout.
Schacht picked up the win to improve to 3-5 on the season. He did not allow a hit in his three innings on the night, fanning four Berea batters.
Centre came into the matchup 0-3 in extra-inning contests on the year.
Game Two: Berea 5, Centre 3
The Colonels got on the board first in the third inning when Schacht crossed the plate on a Berea error.
The Mountaineers responded with five straight runs over the next four innings to gain a 5-1 lead heading into the seventh frame.
Sophomore Cameron Duggins' (Knoxville, Tenn.) two-run single would score Brewer and sophomore Mason Falbo (Mississauga, Ont.) in the final inning, shrinking the final deficit to 5-3 in the final game of the regular season.
Evans went 2-for-4 at the plate for the Colonels, while Duggins finished 1-for-4 with a pair of RBI.
Sophomore Sam Shelley (Lexington, Ky.) started on the hill for Centre, limiting the Mountaineers to one unearned run on just two hits with five strikeouts and three walks in four innings of work.
Junior Mark Dill (Lexington, Ky.) was tagged with the loss for the Colonels, allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits with a strikeout and a walk in 1 2/3 innings of work.
