Centre baseball drops rubber match at LaGrange
LAGRANGE, Ga. - The Centre baseball team played the Saturday rubber match against the tenth-ranked LaGrange Panthers on Saturday after achieving a split in Friday's season-opening doubleheader. The bats could never get going for the Colonels as the Panthers won by a score of 9-1.
LaGrange struck first in the bottom of the third as a wild pitch, and error and a balk in succession helped the Panthers rally for a pair of runs.
Junior Sam Shelley (Lexington, Ky.) kept the Panthers at bay on the mound until the sixth as another pair of Centre defensive miscues allowed LaGrange to tack on three unearned runs in the frame.
In the top half of the seventh, juniors Drew Schacht (Lexington, Ky.) Mason Falbo (Mississauga, Ontario) recorded consecutive hits and advanced to scoring position after a passed ball. With two outs, freshman Chris Esselman (Louisville, Ky.) singled, scoring Schacht, but Falbo was thrown out on a play at the plate to end the threat.
LaGrange would score three runs in the bottom half of the seventh and another insurance run in the next inning to salt the game away.
Schacht and Esselman combined for five of the Colonels' six hits in the contest. The Colonels committed five errors in the game as only five of the Panthers' nine runs were of the earned variety.
Next up for Centre baseball will be the home opener as the Colonels will open Gary Wright Stadium with a midweek clash against the Maryville Scots on Feb. 14.
