Colonels edged in home opener by Maryville, 3-2
DANVILLE, Ky. – Centre baseball dropped a narrow 3-2 decision to Maryville (Tenn.) in their home opener Tuesday evening at Gary Wright Field.
The Colonels fall to 1-3 overall while the visiting Fighting Scots improved to 3-0.
The Scots jumped on freshman righty Jake Holloway (Franklin, Tenn.), as leadoff batter Hayden Hollingsworth stole a pair of bases before scoring on a sacrifice fly in the top of the first.
Holloway kept Maryville off the board in the second and third innings, but the Scots tagged reliever Aaron Scilley (Maysville, Ky.) for an unearned run in the fourth to take a 2-0 lead.
Maryville starter Christian Poulsen pitched five innings while allowing only two hits, and it wasn't until the eighth inning when the Colonels would break the Maryville shutout.
Centre's first run of the inning came from pinch-running Daniel Brown (Sonoma, Calif.), who scored on a wild pitch.
Sophomore Dunning Weed (St. Augustine Fla.) later brought in a run after drawing a bases-loaded walk, tying the game at 2-2.
The Scots got the game-winning run in the top of the ninth, when Mike Homan scored on a balk.
Centre was led at the plate by freshman Austin Sharkey (West Palm Beach, Fla.), who went 2-for-4 with a double and run scored.
Junior Nick Hoffman (Louisville, Ky.) worked and inning and a third in relief, striking out four of the six batters he faced.
The Colonels resume action this Saturday, hosting Piedmont for a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. ET.
