Colonels take Tuesday tilt at Berea, 9-1
BEREA, Ky. – Centre baseball used a big fifth inning to race past in-state foe Berea College Tuesday, winning … at the Mountaineers' Sports Complex.
The Colonels (3-4) were in action for the first time in a week after having their most recent weekend series washed out, handing the Mountaineers (2-8) a loss in the first of two games this season. Centre and Berea are scheduled to meet again at Gary Wright Field Mar. 13.
Mason Falbo (Mississauga, Ontario) homered in the top of the second to open the scoring. The solo shot was the second of his career.
Although Berea plated a run in the bottom of the third, the Colonels would score eight unanswered to run away with the game.
After Will Kirk (Morgantown, N.C.) scored an unearned run in the fifth, Casey Klein (Louisville, Ky.) drove in another with a double to right field. Falbo scored later in the inning on a passed ball to make it 4-1.
Klein's bat struck again in the sixth, as he drove in Chris Esselman (Louisville, Ky.) before Falbo crossed the plate for the third time, bringing Centre's lead up to 7-1.
Parker Selin (Lexington, Ky.) scored in the top of the ninth to help secure the victory.
Klein went 2-for-4 with three RBIs in the win, while Kirk, Falbo, Duggins and Drew Schacht (Lexington, Ky.) each drove in one run.
Aaryn Chandler (St. John, Ind.) tossed three innings in the start, fanning four batters. Four other Colonels combined to throw the final six scoreless innings, allowing only two hits.
Centre hits the road this weekend for a three-game series at Southern Athletic Association member Sewanee.
