Colonels open SAA play with sweep of Sewanee

SEWANEE, Tenn. - The Centre baseball team took to the road for a Southern Athletic Association series showdown with the Sewanee Tigers. In Saturday's conference-opening doubleheader, Centre won the first game 5-3 and then shut out the Tigers 4-0 in the second game.

GAME ONE: Centre 5, Sewanee 3

In the first game, Nick Hoffman (Louisville, Ky.) and Sewanee's Drew Mancuso traded zeroes through the first three innings before the Colonels put together their first threat in the top of the fourth.

Drew Schacht (Lexington, Ky.) led off with a single and consecutive Sewanee errors put Schacht and Mason Falbo (Mississauga, Ontario) in scoring position. Sophomore Seth Hagan (Goshen, Ky.) came to the plate and belted a three-run homer, his third long ball of the season, to put Centre up 3-0.

The Tigers cut into the lead with runs in each of the next two innings, but Centre added to its lead in the seventh as Hagan led off with a single and Cameron Duggins (Knoxville, Tenn.) brought him home with an RBI double.

Sewanee once again cut into the lead in the seventh, but Centre had another response as Falbo led off with a double and Duggins eventually brought pinch runner Daniel Brown (Sonoma, Calif.) across the plate on a sacrifice fly.

In the eighth inning, Aaron Scilley pitched his way out of a jam as Centre recorded the final out on a relay. Schacht moved to the mound in the ninth and induced three straight groundouts to record the save.

Hoffman picked up his first win of the season for Centre, fanning ten batters across seven innings while scattering seven hits.

In addition to the three-run homer in the third, Hagan went 3-for-4 at the plate for the game.

GAME TWO: Centre 4, Sewanee 0

Aaryn Chandler (St. John, Ind.) took the hill for the Colonels in the second game and had an excellent start, limiting the Sewanee offense to just three hits while striking out three Tiger batters. The Colonels couldn't bring home any runners until a major rally in the seventh.

Wesley Jorette (Lawrenceburg, Ky.) reached on a fielder's choice and Parker Selin (Lexington, Ky.) followed with a single. After a pitching change, the runners advanced on a passed ball and Casey Klein (Louisville, Ky.) drew a pinch hit walk. Will Kirk (Morgantown, N.C.) beat out an infield hit to score Jorette and put the first runner on the board for Centre. Schacht followed suit with another infield hit and Falbo doubled into the gap to make it 4-0 Centre.

After getting an RBI in the top half of the seventh inning, Schacht came on in relief for the second time and pitched a scoreless seventh inning to secure Centre's 4-0 victory in game 2.

Falbo and Chris Esselman combined for four of Centre's nine hits in the second game.

The final contest in the series will take place on Sunday afternoon with the first pitch slated for 1 PM EST.
