Colonels drop series finale to Oglethorpe 11-10

DANVILLE, Ky. - Centre baseball dropped a Southern Athletic Association matchup to the Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels, 11-10, on Sunday afternoon.

With the loss the Colonels fall to 8-6 (4-2 SAA) on the year while the Stormy Petrels improve to 13-6 (4-2).

Oglethorpe jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the top of the second inning. With runners in scoring position Jarvis Miller singled to center field, recording two RBIs. Patrick Burnette followed shortly after, smacking an RBI single to left field.

The Stormy Petrels would tag Centre starter Sam Shelley (Lexington, Ky.) for another run in the top of the third as Matt Motz homered to deep left center field.

Sophomore Will Kirk (Morgantown, N.C.)  got the Colonels on the board in the next half inning, scoring on a pass ball.

The following inning Centre tied the game at five. With the bases loaded sophomore Zach McKinney (Elizabethtown, Ky.) drew a walk, scoring Patrick Hope. Kirk followed suit, knocking a sacrifice fly to center field. Junior Drew Schacht (Lexington, Ky.) also joined the scoring parade, lacing an RBI single to right field in the half inning.

Oglethorpe quickly took back the lead in the top of the fifth off of a sacrifice fly from Connor Crooke.

Trailing 6-5 the Colonels stormed back with four runs off of two hits in the bottom of the sixth. With two outs and a runner on third, Schacht recorded his second RBI of the contest. Three batters later with the bases loaded, Hope drew a crucial walk scoring Schacht. Freshman Austin Sharkey (West Palm Beach, Fla.) continued the scoring barrage, lacing a two RBI single through the left side.

Centre's lead would be short lived as the Stormy Petrels torched freshman Jordan Gunter (Louisville, Ky.) for four unearned runs in the next half inning.

Following the seventh inning stretch, junior Mason Falbo (Mississauga, Ontario) knocked an RBI double to deep left field tying the game at 10.

The Stormy Petrels took the lead for good in the next half inning as Araujo knocked an RBI single in the gap.

The Colonels could not muster any offense in the final two innings of play.

In the loss, Schacht paced Centre with three hits and two RBIs. Falbo was a close second with three hits, including a double, and an RBI.

Senior Aaron Scilley (Maysville, Ky.) also had a solid inning of relief in the defeat.

The Colonels with return to action this Tuesday at 6 p.m. ET against Berea.
