Colonels split Sunday twin bill at Birmingham Southern

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Centre baseball split a doubleheader Sunday at Birmingham Southern, dropping game one, 13-7, before claiming the series finale, 1-0.

The Colonels snap a 10-game skid with the win, moving to 13-18 overall and 5-10 in the Southern Athletic Association. The host Panthers finish the day 18-14 overall and 8-10 in-conference.

GAME ONE: BSC 13, Centre 7

Centre scored in each of the first five innings, but a six-spot in the fourth from the Panthers helped the home side take Sunday's opener.

Casey Klein (Louisville, Ky.), Will Kirk (Morgantown, N.C.) and Chris Esselman (Louisville, Ky.) each delivered early RBIs as Centre built a 6-3 advantage.

The Panthers launched three homeruns in the fourth, taking a 9-6 lead it wouldn't relinquish.

Esselman drove in another run in the fifth to trim the lead to 9-7, but BSC scored four more unanswered to comfortably seal the win.

Klein went 3-for-4 with a RBI and run scored, and Esselman was 2-for-5 with a team-high three RBIs.

Drew Schacht (Lexington, Ky.) was 2-for-5 with two runs, and Kirk went 2-for-4 with a run and RBI.

On the mound, freshman Jake Holloway (Franklin, Tenn.) led the squad with two shutout innings, allowing one hit.

GAME TWO: Centre 1, BSC 0

The Colonels claimed a much-needed victory in game two, as Esselman tossed five shutout innings in the start.

Centre scored the game's lone run in the second, when Austin Sharkey (West Palm Beach, Fla.) brought home Klein on a sacrifice fly.

Neither side managed much offense the remainder of the game, but Centre stranded eight Panther baserunners as Esselman scattered five hits and fanned three batters.

Schacht threw the final two innings to earn the save.

Centre has a nonconference meeting at Thomas More this Thursday at 4 p.m. ET before closing the regular season at home in a three-game series against Millsaps.
