Baseball outplays Thomas More down stretch, wins 10-9

CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. – Centre baseball claimed a back-and-forth affair Thursday evening at Thomas More, winning 10-9 with late-inning execution.

The Colonels move to 14-18 while the host Saints fall to 9-12 overall.

Thomas More led 3-0 before the Colonels scored five unanswered to take a brief lead.

Mason Falbo (Mississauga, Ontario) drove in Drew Schacht (Lexington, Ky.) with a double to left in the fourth inning, and Will Kirk (Morgantown, N.C.) followed in the fifth with a sacrifice fly to bring in Tyler Tucker (Louisville, Ky.).

Centre plated three in the sixth, with Chris Esselman (Louisville, Ky.), Cameron Duggins (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Tucker each contributing RBIs, giving the Colonels a 5-3 edge.

The Saints' offense exploded for six runs in the bottom of the frame, powered by a grand slam from Jacob Whitford.

Esselman and Tucker delivered again in the seventh, however, with the latter clearing the bases on a double to left that tied the score at 9-9.

Schacht benefitted from a wild pitch in the top of the eighth, scoring with two outs to regain the lead for the Colonels.

That proved sufficient, as the junior took care of business on the mound in the ninth by striking out the side and clinching the victory.

Tucker paced the Colonels at the plate, going 3-for-5 with four RBIs, while Falbo, Esselman and Zach McKinney (Elizabethtown, Ky.) each finished with a pair of hits.

Schacht and Aaron Scilley (Maysville, Ky.) tossed the last three innings on the mound for the Colonels, keeping the Saints off the board while surrendering no hits and just three base runners.

Centre closes its regular season with a three-game Southern Athletic Association series against Millsaps this weekend.
