CONWAY, Ark – In a bizarre set of circumstances, the Centre baseball team's series against the Millsaps Majors, originally slated to be played in Danville, was relocated to Hendrix College after the threat of inclement weather at both Centre and Millsaps.
In Saturday's doubleheader, the Colonels lost the first game 6-5 in a back and forth affair before winning 13-7 in the evening session.
In the opening game, the Majors got on the board first with a pair of runs in the top of the third, including a rare steal of home. The Colonels responded in the bottom half of the frame as Seth Hagan (Goshen, Ky.) brought in Will Kirk (Morgantown, N.C.) on a sacrifice fly and then Drew Schacht returned the favor on the Majors with his own steal of home to tie the score.
Both teams stranded runners in the next two innings and Millsaps took the lead in the top half of the sixth inning with an RBI single. Centre rallied once again in the bottom of the inning as Cameron Duggins (Knoxville, Tenn.), Zach McKinney (Elizabethtown, Ky.) and Kirk all drew walks and Schacht ripped a base hit to right field, scoring Duggins and McKinney to put Centre on top for the first time.
Millsaps tied the game once again and loaded the bases in the eighth, scoring a pair of runs on a Centre error. Like they had done twice before, Centre immediately responded with a run in the bottom of the inning as Casey Klein (Louisville, Ky.) drove home Schacht with a base hit. Although Centre loaded the bases in the eighth, they could not plate another run after Klein's single and this proved to be the last threat of the game for Centre as they lost by a score of 6-5.
The Majors jumped out in the second game, determined to get a Saturday sweep. Millsaps batted around in the top of the third, scoring five runs on six hits. Centre began the comeback in the bottom of the third, getting a run back as an RBI groundout from Schacht scored Wesley Jorette (Lawrenceburg, Ky.), cutting the deficit to four.
Centre tacked on two more runs in the fourth. Mason Falbo (Mississauga, Ontario) and Jordan Gunter (Louisville, Ky.) singled and both scored on an RBI triple from Jorette to make it 5-3 in favor of Millsaps.
After Millsaps scored another run in the top of the fifth, Centre responded with its biggest rally of the year in the bottom half of the inning. Quinn Andrews (Chicago, Ill.) led off with a walk, prompting a pitching change. After Schacht walked, Parker Selin (Lexington, Ky.) singled to plate the first run. Falbo was hit by a pitch to load the bases and then Gunter drew a bases loaded walk to make it 6-5 as Millsaps changed pitchers once again. An infield hit from Duggins scored Falbo to tie the score. Jorette and McKinney then walked with the bases loaded and the Colonels now had an 8-6 lead as Millsaps put in their fourth pitcher of the inning. Andrews drew his second walk of the inning and the fourth bases loaded walk of the inning for the Colonels. A Schacht sacrifice fly plated one more run and Selin capped off the rally with a double to left field to drive in two more and put Centre up 12-6. All told, the Colonels sent 13 men to the plate in the inning, scoring nine runs on just two hits.
In the bottom of the sixth, Centre tacked on another run as Gunter doubled and Duggins brought him home with a base hit. Schacht, who drove in two runs for the game, moved to the mound in the sixth inning and closed the door on the game, pitching his way out of a jam in the seventh to secure a 13-7 win.
Seven different players drove in runs for the Colonels, with Selin and Jorette leading the way with three each.
Centre and Millsaps will play the rubber match of the series on Sunday.
