Colonels fall to Rhodes in SAA semifinals

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Centre baseball team came into Saturday's semifinal matchup with Rhodes with momentum after staying alive with a pair of victories on Friday. The Colonels hung tough against the Lynx but a late Rhodes rally propelled the home team to a 6-2 victory over Centre.

Fresh off their offensive outbursts against Sewanee and Oglethorpe on Friday, Centre got on the board first against Rhodes.

Will Kirk (Morgantown, N.C.) and Drew Schacht (Lexington, Ky.) drew walks to start the game and a single from Casey Klein (Louisville, Ky.) gave the Colonels a quick 1-0 lead. Rhodes would answer in the bottom of the first with a two-run homer by Will Huertin to take the lead.

The pitching settled down for both teams after the opening inning as the Colonels and Lynx traded zeroes until the sixth inning, when Centre tied the score at 2-2 after Cameron Duggins (Knoxville, Tenn.) was hit by a pitch, scoring Klein, who had advanced to third on a wild pitch during the previous at-bat.

The Lynx worked their way out of a jam in the top of the seventh and then Huertin came through with an RBI single that eventually proved to be the game winner. Rhodes tacked on insurance runs in the eighth inning to provide the final margin.

Schacht and Selin each had stellar defensive plays in the loss, the former an over-the-shoulder grab in left and the latter diving to catch a bunt from the pitcher's mound.

The Colonels finished the 2018 campaign with a 17-22 record.
