Oakley Watkins named as finalist for Allstate-AFCA Good Works Team
Jul 19, 2012
Centre's Oakley Watkins was named as a finalist for the Allstate-American Football Coaches Association Good Works team, the organizations announced in a release Tuesday.
Watkins, a senior offensive lineman from Frankfort, Ky., was one of 117 college football players selected nationally. The Good Works Team members will be announced in September, with Watkins among 65 nominees for 11 spots among NCAA FCS, Division II, Division III and NAIA schools. The other 11 members of the 22-member team will come from a group of 52 finalists from NCAA FBS schools.
The Good Works Team, which is in its 21st season, honors college football players who make a difference off the field through community service and working with charitable organizations while maintaining a strong academic standing.
Watkins has helped in Danville and his hometown of Frankfort for years, logging more than 3,000 hours of community service, volunteering to help with youth sports, coordinating charitable events and taking part in mission trips.
On the field, Watkins started every game at right tackle in 2011 as the Colonels posted a 9-2 record, advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III Playoff and finished ranked 16th in the country.
