DANVILLE, Ky. (CentreColonels.com) – The Centre field hockey team was bested in a thrilling 3-2 overtime contest on Friday night by visiting 14th-ranked Christopher Newport at the South Campus Field. The Colonels suffered their first loss of the season, dropping to 2-1, while the Captains improved to 3-0 with the victory.
With the score knotted at 1-1 in the second half, Centre senior forward Megan Flocken (Dexter, Mich.) scored her third goal of the season in the 51st minute of action to put the Colonels on top 2-1.
Centre would hold onto that lead for over 15 minutes, before Christopher Newport's Carol Thompson found Josie Morgan for the score with just under four minutes showing on the clock to knot the contest at 2-2.
The Colonels would have one last chance to earn the win in regulation when junior forward Brooklyn Bell (Louisville, Ky.) was able to get a shot off in the 68th minute, but Captain goaltender Bailey Lien made the save to send the game into overtime.
Less than a minute into the bonus period, Christopher Newport's Rachael Allshouse got free on a breakaway and was able to find the back of the cage to seal the 3-2 overtime win for the nationally-ranked Captains.
Christopher Newport held advantages of 14-7 in shots and 8-5 in penalty corners.
Bell scored her fifth goal of the season in the first half off the assist by junior forward Hayley Barker (Louisville, Ky.).
Allshouse finished with a pair of goals for the Captains.
Centre senior goalkeeper Kirby Roberts (Louisville, Ky.) made seven saves between the pipes for the Colonels.
Centre returns to action tomorrow hosting DePauw in a non-conference matchup at 12:00 p.m. ET.
