Shots (on goal)
DANVILLE, Ky. (CentreColonels.com) – For the second consecutive game, the Centre field hockey team went to overtime at the South Turf Field, and for the second consecutive time, the Colonels came up on the losing end, this time falling to the DePauw Tigers by a score of 3-2.
DePauw struck the first blow as Reilly Bruce gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead after a penalty corner at the 16:30 mark of the first half. DePauw keeper Sarah Guendert saved a pair of Centre scoring attempts in the final minutes to preserve a one-goal halftime lead.
Just under 15 minutes into the second half, Centre converted on the equalizer as senior Nicole DeHerde (Hope, N.J.) scored her first goal of the young season to make it 1-1. Ten minutes later, Bruce would play a role in another goal, assisting on a goal from Paige Berliner to give the Tigers the lead once again.
With less than five minutes remaining in the game, freshman Caroline Brotzge (Louisville, Ky.) scored her second goal of the game to knot the score at 2-2. Both teams would have scoring chances in the closing minutes of regulation but the shots would sail wide and the Colonels and Tigers headed into overtime.
The Colonels would have a pair of shots sail wide in the opening stages of the overtime period. Senior Kirby Roberts (Louisville, Ky.) would record a pair of saves in overtime, but Kate Milner would put home the game winner in the 81st minute to secure the win for the Tigers.
The Centre field hockey team will open Southern Athletic Association play next week on the road, as the Colonels will travel to Rhodes for an SAA Championship rematch on Sept. 17, followed by a trip to Hendrix the next day.
