Colonels Drop SAA Opener at Rhodes 2-1

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (CentreColonels.com) – The Centre field hockey team were edged in the 2016 Southern Athletic Association (SAA) opener on Saturday afternoon by a score of 2-1 to host Rhodes at Mason Field. The Colonels fell to 2-3 overall while the defending SAA Tournamet Champion Lynx improved to 4-1 on the season.
Rhodes took a 1-0 first half lead after Christina DiFelice found the back of the cage in the 28th minute of action.
The Lynx would take the one-goal advantage into the break, before Centre senior forward Megan Flocken (Dexter, Mich.) evened the score at 1-1 with her second goal of the season in the 53rd minute of play.
With the score knotted late in the second half, Rhodes' Mackenzie Busby sealed the win for the Lynx with a goal with just over three minutes showing on the clock.
The Colonels nearly tied the score again in the final minute, but junior forward Brooklyn Bell's (Louisville, Ky.) shot would hit the post, as Rhodes was able to hang on with the conference victory.
Flocken and Bell each finished with a pair of shots to lead Centre, while Kennedy Brislin paced the Lynx with two shots.
Senior goalkeeper Kirby Roberts (Louisville, Ky.) made three saves for the Colonels.
Rhodes edged Centre in both shots (8-6) and penalty corners (11-8).
The Colonels are right back in action tomorrow traveling to Conway, Ark. for another SAA contest at Hendrix at 11 a.m. CT.
