@CentreFH Extends Win Streak with 2-0 Shutout against Roanoke
Shots (on goal)
DANVILLE, Ky. (CentreColonels.com) – The Centre field hockey team extended its winning streak to three games while putting the first blemish on the record of previously undefeated Roanoke as the Colonels defeated the Maroons by a score of 2-0.
The first half was a defensive struggle. Both the Colonels and the Maroons had a tough time getting any momentum going and scoring opportunities were scarce for both teams in the opening 20 minutes.
At the 23-minute mark, junior Hayley Barker (Louisville, Ky.) was reinserted into the game and the intensity level picked up for the Colonels as Barker had three shots in the final five minutes of the half, but they were all blocked as the game remained scoreless going into halftime.
In the second half, the game remained scoreless for the first 20 minutes but the Colonels were able to force several penalty corners. In the 55th minute, senior Alicia Kalbfleisch (Louisville, Ky.) took a penalty corner and shortly thereafter, the Colonels got on the board for the first time as sophomore Emily Schank (Louisville, Ky.) scored after an assist from senior Ceci Vollbrecht (Vienna, Va.).
The Colonels kept up the attack for the rest of the half and it paid off just seven minutes after Centre's opening goal. Senior Cole Jordan (Louisville, Ky.) scored on an unassisted effort to give the Colonels a 2-0 lead and Centre would only allow one Roanoke shot the rest of the way en route to a critical non-conference victory.
The goals by Schank and Jordan represented each player's fourth scoring effort of the season. Overall, the Colonels held a 9-4 advantage over the Maroons in shots for the game.
Centre field hockey will return to action on Sunday as they face Southern Athletic Association newcomer Ferrum at the south turf field. The game is slated for a noon start.
