NEWBERRY, S.C. (CentreColonels.com) – After 79 minutes of scoreless field hockey in a non-conference matchup between Centre and Division II Newberry on Friday afternoon, freshman midfielder Caroline Brotzge's (Louisville, Ky.) goal gave the Colonels their eighth consecutive victory with a 1-0 win.
Centre improved to 10-3 on the season, matching its longest winning streak since the Colonels won eight in a row during the 2014 campaign. The Wolves dropped to 4-7 with the loss. Centre has now recorded six shutouts in its last seven games, outscoring opponents 42-2 during the current winning streak.
Brotzge took a lead pass on a breakaway, beating Newberry goalkeeper Dakota Elzy to the right side on the game-winner. The freshman now has four goals on the season.
Shots were an even 7-7 in the contest. The Wolves outshot Centre 6-2 in the first half, before the Colonels held a 5-1 shooting advantage the rest of the way, including a 3-0 edge in the bonus period.
Centre senior goaltender Kirby Roberts (Louisville, Ky.), this week's Southern Athletic Association (SAA) Defensive Player of the Week, made three saves for the Colonels, while Elzy had four stops for Newberry.
Brotzge and senior defender Kathryn Hardesty (Louisville, Ky.) paced Centre with two shots apiece, and Caitlyn Warren tallied a game-high three shots for the Wolves.
The Colonels are back in action tomorrow with another non-conference matchup at Belmont Abbey at 10 a.m.
