MEMPHIS, Tenn. (CentreColonels.com) – Playing in its fifth straight Southern Athletic Association (SAA) championship game, the Centre field hockey team fell by a score of 3-0 to host Rhodes in the title matchup on Sunday afternoon at Mason Field.
The Colonels (14-4) saw their 12-game winning streak snap at the hands of the Lynx (15-2), who dealt Centre its last loss on Sept. 17.
Sixth-year head coach Jenelle Anthony has now led the Colonels to at least 14 wins in three of the last four seasons.
On Sunday, Centre had a good chance to take an early 1-0 lead, but senior forward Kelsey Gordon's (Louisville, Ky.) shot following a penalty corner hit the post. The Colonels forced the issue with a pair of shots and two penalty corners in the first seven minutes of action, but Centre was not able to find the back of the cage.
Rhodes' Hailey Mules would put the Lynx on top 1-0 with a goal in the 20th minute of action.
Late in the second half, Rhodes tacked on a pair of scores in the 58th and 61st minutes, respectively, to seal the second consecutive conference tournament crown for the Lynx.
Senior forward Megan Flocken (Dexter, Mich.) paced Centre with a game-high three shots, including two on goal in the contest.
Senior goalkeeper Kirby Roberts (Louisville, Ky.) finished with three saves in the game.
Shots were an even 9-9 in the matchup, while the Colonels held a 9-6 advantage in penalty corners.
The SAA will release its field hockey all-conference teams on Tuesday, Nov. 8 at 12 p.m. ET.
