Colonels blank Big Red, earn first victory of the season
Shots (on goal)
DANVILLE, Ky. – Centre College field hockey earned their first victory of the season Sunday, defeating visiting Denison, 2-0, at South Campus Field.
The Colonels (1-1) limited the Big Red (1-1) attack en route to the season's first shutout, and capitalized on goals from sophomore Savannah Elpers (Louisville, Ky.) and junior Emily Schank (Louisville, Ky.).
Centre dominated the shot-clock in the first period, getting off 12 attempts (six on goal) to Denison's one.
But it wasn't until sophomore Olivia Carter (Louisville, Ky.) set up Elpers late in the half that the Colonels got on the board. It marked Elpers' first goal of the season and third of her career.
Schank wasted little time after the intermission to double Centre's lead, burying a shot off a deflection by the Big Red goalie. The junior forward leads the Colonels with two goals this season.
Sophomore keeper Kristen Mulcahy (Cedarburg, Wis.) – who finished with three saves – and the Centre defense combined to blank the Denison attack. The Big Red finished with seven shots to Centre's 20.
The Colonels also finished with twice as many penalty corners (10 to 5).
Centre returns to the field next Saturday, September 9, hosting Wooster at 12 p.m. ET.
