Rhodes edges Centre in SAA match, 1-0
Shots (on goal)
DANVILLE, Ky. – Dubbed the Southern Athletic Association "Game of the Week," Saturday's field hockey match between Centre and Rhodes lived up to its billing. The visiting Lynx escaped South Turf with a narrow 1-0 overtime victory, however, scoring the golden goal off a penalty.
Centre falls to 7-3 overall and 2-1 in the SAA, while Rhodes advances to 6-4 (3-0).
The Colonels managed a slight advantage in possession in the opening half, but the two sides each got off six shots in the first 35 minutes.
The second period was much of the same, as the two teams again totaled a similar seven shots. The Colonels and Lynx each had their scoring opportunities, finishing with 10 penalty corners apiece while putting a handful of shots on target. But each defense held, and both goalies finished with several saves to keep it scoreless after a full 70 minutes.
Rhodes drew a penalty stroke less than one minute into the overtime period, and Mackenzie Busby buried the ensuing shot to end the game.
Forward Emily Schank (Louisville, Ky.) finished with three shots and one on goal, as seven different Colonels recorded a shot on target.
Sophomore goalie Kristen Mulcahy (Cedarburg, Wis.) recorded four crucial saves between the pipes for Centre.
Centre has a short break before hosting Hendrix Sunday at 11 a.m. ET.
