Colonels edged by eighth-ranked Captains on the road, 2-1
Shots (on goal)
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Centre College field hockey fell 2-1 at eighth-ranked Christopher Newport Friday at Captains Turf Field.
The Captains (12-1) ran their winning streak up to eight games, while the Colonels dropped to 8-4 overall with the hardfought defeat.
Despite being out-shot 21-3, the Colonels managed to stay within striking distance thanks to a career-best nine saves from sophomore Kristen Mulcahy (Cedarburg, Wis.).
CNU leading scorer Rachael Allshouse scored off a rebound in just the third minute of action to put the Captains on the board early, but Centre leveled things in the 21st minute.
Allshouse netted her second goal less than two minutes after the second half started, and it proved to be the game winner.
Centre, playing without leading scorer Hayley Barker (Louisville, Ky.) managed only two shots the final 35 minutes with one on target.
"This week was a tough one for our program," Head Coach Jenelle Anthony said. "However, the team was resilient and put together an amazing performance against a very talented CNU team. I could not be prouder of their efforts!"
The Colonels continue their road trip Saturday, traveling to take on Randolph-Macon at 6 p.m. ET.
