ASHLAND, Va. - The Centre field hockey team rebounded from its tough loss at eighth-ranked Christopher Newport on Friday with a 4-0 shutout victory over the Randolph-Macon Yellow Jackets.
The Colonels (9-4) opened the scoring ten minutes into the contest when sophomore Savannah Elpers (Louisville, Ky.) went along the right side and found senior Brooklyn Bell (Louisville, Ky.) for her tenth goal of the year to put Centre up 1-0.
Centre kept the pressure on and was soon rewarded as junior Emily Schank (Louisville, Ky.) scored on an unassisted effort just five minutes after the opening goal to give the Colonels a two-goal lead. Sophomore Kristen Mulcahy (Cedarburg, Wisc.) stood firm in goal, stopping a pair of Yellow Jacket scoring chances to preserve Centre's 2-0 lead as the two teams headed into the locker room for halftime.
Savannah Elpers record her second assist of the contest in the 53rd minute as she got into the middle of the circle and connected with freshman Sarah Biggs (Louisville, Ky.) along the right side, who slipped it in to put Centre up 3-0.
With the game well at hand, the Colonels put one last goal on the board in the 65th minute as sophomore Olivia Carter (Louisville, Ky.) took a rebound from the stick of freshman Mackenzie Conkling (Massapequa, N.Y.) and scored her fourth goal of the year to provide Centre with the winning margin.
The Colonels outshot the Yellow Jackets 19-12 for the game. Mulcahy picked up two more saves in the second half to secure her third shutout of the season.
Centre will close its field hockey regular season with four straight home games, starting with the annual Play 4 the Cure game against Transylvania on Friday.
