DANVILLE, Ky. – Centre field hockey celebrated Senior Day in style Saturday, defeating Sewanee by a lopsided 7-0 score in the regular season finale at South Campus Field.
The Colonels improved to 12-4 overall and 5-1 for the Southern Athletic Association slate, dropping Sewanee to 7-6 (3-2).
Prior to the game, Centre honored the careers of seniors Christine Semple (Louisville, Ky.), Natascha Loeb (Charlotte, N.C.), Brooklyn Bell (Louisville, Ky.), Mary Andrews (St. Louis, Mo.) and Hayley Barker (Louisville, Ky.)
On the field, the Colonels left little doubt which side was superior, scoring less than two minutes into the game and dominating possession throughout.
Bell netted her 13th goal of the season in the second minute, and scored again in the 14th minute off of Loeb's assist. She increased her SAA-leading total to 15 goals for the year.
Sophomore Savannah Elpers (Louisville, Ky.) added her fifth goal of the season in the 20th minute, giving Centre a 3-0 lead it carried into the half.
The Colonels continued to overwhelm Sewanee in the second period, out-shooting their guests 14-0 while tacking on four more goals.
Barker scored twice within a five-minute span to make it 5-0 and increase her season total to 14 scores.
Sophomore Caroline Brotzge (Louisville, Ky.) scored the seventh and final Centre goal in the 69th minute off a penalty corner.
The final margin was the biggest for the Colonels this season, topping a six-goal, 8-2 victory against Hendrix Oct. 8. It was also the fifth shutout and third in the previous four matches for the Centre defense and sophomore goalie Kristen Mulcahy (Cedarburg, Wis.)
Centre enters the postseason next weekend, traveling to Rhodes for the SAA Tournament. Stay tuned for complete tournament details.
