Colonels handle Warriors in SAA quarterfinal bout, 5-1

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Centre field hockey cruised past Hendrix, 5-1, Friday in the quarterfinal round of the Southern Athletic Association (SAA) Tournament, hosted by Rhodes at Mason Field.
In a game delayed due to inclement weather in the area, the second-seeded Colonels (13-4) scored early and never looked back against the seven-seed Warriors (4-11).
Senior Hayley Barker (Louisville, Ky.) scored in the sixth minute, giving the Colonels a lead they wouldn't relinquish. It was Barker's 15th goal of the season.
Bell netted her SAA-leading 17th goal to open the scoring in the second half, and freshman Sarah Biggs (Louisville, Ky.) followed just minutes later to make it 4-0 Colonels. Emily Schank (Louisville, Ky.) and Peyton Baer (Asheville, N.C.) assisted on the goals.
Hendrix's Romee Blokland put the Warriors on the board in the 52nd minute, but Biggs netted an unassisted goal roughly two minutes later to push the Colonels back up, 5-1.
Centre overwhelmed Hendrix in shots (44 to 5) and shots on goal (23 to 2), finishing with nine penalty corners.
Sophomore keeper Emily Mulcahy (Cedarburg, Wis.) finished with one save in 70 minutes of action.
Centre moves onto Saturday's semifinals, and will face the winner of three-seed Tranylvania and six-seed Ferrum at 3 p.m. ET.
