CLEVELAND, Ohio (CentreColonels.com) – The Centre men's basketball team fell by a score of 94-66 to the State University of New York at Geneseo on Thursday night in the opening round of the Bill Sudeck Holiday Tournament hosted by Case Western Reserve. The Colonels move to 4-5 with the loss, while the Knights improved to 7-3 on the season.
Senior guard Matt Gump (Bellefontaine, Ohio) paced Centre with 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting, including 2-of-3 from behind the arc.
Freshman guards Bailey Rakes (Mt. Washington, Ky.) and Art Walker (Mt. Sterling, Ky.) netted 10 points apiece for the Colonels. Rakes connected on 4-of-5 field goals and 2-of-3 shots from long range while Walker was 4-of-11 from the field.
Senior guard Brett Jones (Danville, Ky.) scored a career-high eight points on 3-of-4 shooting, draining 2-of-3 3-pointers in the contest.
Freshman guard Perry Ayers (Bowling Green, Ky.) pulled down a game-high six boards for Centre.
John Decker led five players in double-figures for SUNY Geneseo with 21 points followed by Justin Ringen and Kevin Crockett with 18 and 15 points, respectively.
Centre shot 38.2 percent (26-of-68) from the field, connecting on 32.3 percent (10-of-31) shots from downtown and 50.0 percent (4-of-8) of free throws, while the Knights were 59.3 percent (32-of-54) on field goals, 48.1 percent (13-of-27) from behind the arc and 85.0 percent (17-of-20) from the charity stripe.
SUNY Geneseo outrebounded the Colonels 39-29, but Centre held advantages of 17-8 in points off turnovers and 39-20 in bench points.
The Colonels have now dropped three games in a row for the first time since the 2009-10 season.
Centre is back in action in the consolation game tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. ET at Horsburgh Gymnasium against either Case Western or Bethany.
