DANVILLE, Ky. (CentreColonels.com) – The Centre men's basketball team connected on 16 shots from behind the arc from nine different players to earn an 85-63 Southern Athletic Association (SAA) victory over Millsaps on Sunday afternoon at Alumni Gymnasium.
The Colonels collect their third straight win and boost their records to 11-7 overall and 7-2 in SAA action, while the Majors drop to 4-16 and 1-8, respectively. Centre sits alone atop the SAA standings following the pair of conference wins over the weekend.
The Colonels jumped out to an early 10-2 lead just over five minutes into the contest buoyed by five points from sophomore guard Tucker Sine (Bowling Green, Ky.).
Millsaps would shrink the Centre advantage to 13-9, before the Colonels used a 23-2 run highlighted by 11 consecutive points by freshman guard Art Walker (Mt. Sterling, Ky.) to push the Centre lead to 36-11 with 2:28 showing on the first half clock. The Colonels were 5-of-7 from behind the arc and 4-of-4 from the charity stripe during the surge. Sophomore guard Jarod Griffin (Lexington, Ky.) also buried a pair of 3-pointers to help Centre build its advantage.
The Colonels took a 38-14 lead into the break.
In the first six minutes of the second half, Centre connected on five shots from downtown to gain its largest advantage of the night at 57-23. The Colonels opened the half with 3-pointers on their first three possessions by Sine, freshman guard Bailey Rakes (Mt. Washington, Ky.) and Griffin.
The Majors responded with 10 unanswered points to minimize the deficit to 57-33 with just under 12 minutes to go in the game, when senior guard Sam Gruber (LaGrange, Ky.) completed a four-point play on a 25-foot jumper to put the Colonels on top 61-33 with 11:21 to play.
Millsaps' James Turner drained a 3-pointer on the other end, before Centre went on a 10-2 run keyed by five points by junior forward Zach Schmucker (Cincinnati, Ohio) which gave the Colonels a 71-38 advantage with 8:36 showing on the clock.
The Majors would use a late 13-3 run to cut the final deficit to 85-63.
Sine, Griffin and freshman forward Jakob Spitzer (Atlanta, Ga.) each tallied 12 points apiece to lead the Colonels, while Walker chipped in 11 points and Gruber added 10 markers off the bench for Centre.
Sine also recorded team-highs of seven rebounds and five assists in the triumph. Griffin, Spitzer and freshman forward Jacob Bates (LaGrange, Ky.) each pulled down six boards for the Colonels, as well.
Turner paced Millsaps with 12 points and six rebounds off the bench, while Sam Kohnke had 11 markers and five boards for the Majors.
Centre outshot Millsaps 46.9 percent (30-of-64) to 37.3 percent (25-of-67) from the field, including 40.0 percent (16-of-40) to 34.5 percent (10-of-29) from long range. The Colonels were also 9-of-10 from the free throw line on the day.
Centre held a 41-36 edge in the rebounding column and held advantages of 19-13 in points off turnovers, 11-7 in second chance points, 22-16 in points in the paint and 7-0 in fastbreak points.
The Colonels never trailed in the contest.
Centre returns to action on Friday, Feb. 3 hosting Oglethorpe at 8 p.m. ET at Alumni Gymnasium.
