MEMPHIS, Tenn. (CentreColonels.com) – The Centre men's basketball team fell by a score of 117-94 to Southern Athletic Association (SAA) foe Rhodes in a conference contest on Friday night at Mallory Gymnasium.
The Colonels see their season-high winning streak snapped at five games, as Centre moves to 13-8 overall and 9-3 in SAA play. The Lynx improve to 12-10 on the season and 9-3 in league action with the victory.
Rhodes' 117 points are the most for a Colonel opponent since a 124-123 win over California State Stanislaus in 1989.
Rhodes gained a 15-point advantage in the first half, sinking 12-of-25 3-pointers and 8-of-8 free throws before taking a 62-47 lead at the break. The Lynx forced 13 Colonel turnovers in the first half, resulting in 16 Rhodes points.
The Lynx build their edge to as many as 24 points at the 14:00 mark of the second half at 81-57 following a 12-2 run.
With Rhodes holding an 84-60 advantage, Centre used a 12-3 surge highlighted by 3-pointers by sophomore guard Tucker Sine (Bowling Green, Ky.) and senior guard Matt Gump (Bellefontaine, Ohio) to shrink the deficit to 15 points at 87-72 with just under 10 minutes showing on the second half clock.
Unfortunately for the Colonels, the Lynx would answer with a 9-2 spurt of their own before pulling away for the 23-point conference triumph.
Freshman forward Jakob Spitzer (Atlanta, Ga.) matched a career-high with 23 points to lead all scorers. Spitzer shot 9-of-11 from the field and 5-of-6 from the free throw line for Centre.
Sine netted 16 points on 5-of-11 shooting including 2-of-6 from downtown to go with 4-of-4 from the charity stripe. Freshman guard Perry Ayers (Bowling Green, Ky.) and freshman forwad Jacob Bates (LaGrange, Ky.) dropped in 14 points apiece, combining to shoot 11-of-13 from the field and 6-of-8 from the free throw line.
Senior guard Sam Gruber (LaGrange, Ky.) chipped in 12 points off the bench, connecting on 4-of-7 field goals, 2-of-5 3-pointers and 2-of-2 free throws.
Tyler Gee led Rhodes with 16 points, followed by Daniel Darst off the bench with 13 markers.
Despite the loss, the Colonels shot a season-high 61.4 percent (35-of-57) from the field. Centre was 27.8 percent (5-of-18) from long range and 70.4 percent (19-of-27) from the free throw line.
The Lynx connected on 53.7 percent (36-of-67) of field goals, including 42.5 percent (17-of-40) from behind the arc to go with 82.4 percent (28-of-34) from the charity stripe.
Rhodes held a 37-26 rebounding edge while holding advantages of 36-14 in points off turnovers, 12-2 in second chance points and 80-33 in bench points. The Colonels outscored the Lynx 58-38 in the paint and 20-2 on fast breaks.
Centre is back in action on Sunday afternoon traveling to Conway, Ark. to take on Hendrix at 2 p.m. CT.
