Efficient offense helps Colonels defeat Rhodes, 101-96

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Centre men's basketball shot above 56 percent and held on late for a thrilling 101-96 victory Sunday at Rhodes in Southern Athletic Association (SAA) action.

The Colonels have now won six of their past seven, and are 10-7 overall and 5-2 in the SAA, dropping the host Lynx to 9-9 (3-4 SAA).

Centre led a closely-contested first half midway through the opening period, going 10 of 15 from the field to start the game and claim a 23-19 lead.

The Colonels went into the half leading 50-43, shooting above 63 percent (21-33) from the field during the first period. Sophomore Jacob Bates (LaGrange, Ky.) went a perfect 6-for-6 for 13 points in the opening half, and classmate Jakob Spitzer (Atlanta) added 10 points.

Rhodes, which trailed by as many as 14 points, clawed back in the second period.

The Lynx used a late run to regain their first lead since the early stages of the game, 91-89 with just two minutes left.

Sophomore Art Walker (Mt. Sterling, Ky.) drained a 3-pointer to put Centre back on top, but Rhodes' Daniel Darst swung the lead back to the hosts with a layup on the other end.

Centre's sophomore Perry Ayers (Bowling Green, Ky.), who scored 17 of his 21 points in the second half, dropped five points in a row to make it 97-93, and the Colonels wouldn't look back.

Ayers finished 6 of 8 overall to lead Centre with 21 points, and Bates finished with his fourth double-double on 19 points and 10 rebounds.

Spitzer tallied a season-high 16 points, and Walker and junior Tucker Sine (Bowling Green, Ky.) netted 15 and 12, respectively.

The Colonels held the Lynx to just 10 of 34 from 3-point distance, limiting their offensive attack.

Centre meets Hendrix and Rhodes again next week, but will be back home inside Alumni Gymnasium. Centre faces Hendrix Jab. 26 at 8 p.m. ET.
