MAUMELLE, Ark. (CentreColonels.com) – The opening round of the Southern Athletic Association Men's Golf Championships is in the books from Maumelle C.C. in Arkansas and Centre ended its first 18 holes in third place after posting a combined team score of 305.

At 305, the Colonels sit two shots ahead of Sewanee and eight shots ahead of both Birmingham Southern and Oglethorpe. Berry leads the tournament after 18 holes with a score of 298, followed by Rhodes at 299.

Individually, the top score of the day for the Colonels belonged to senior Dakota Jarman (Danville, Ky.), who posted a round of 75. Jarman finished one under par for his final seven holes, including a birdie on the par 5 sixth hole, and sits in a tie for fifth place overall through the first day.

Senior Andrew Horn (Franklin, Tenn.) returned to the lineup for the conference championships and got off to a hot start with birdies on his first two holes on the way to a round of 76. Horn sits just outside the top ten overall.

Senior Carson Riley (Hendersonville, Tenn.) and junior Andrew McKinney (Danville, Ky.) each posted rounds of 77 on Friday. Riley shook off a rough start, but countered three bogeys with consecutive birdies on the front nine. McKinney came up huge with a clutch birdie on the par 3 ninth hole to end his round.

Sophomore Jake Mattingly (Louisville, Ky.) and junior Hall Rupert (Powells Point, N.C.) finished off Centre's Friday rounds with respective scores of 78 and 81.

The second of three rounds at the SAA Championships will commence on Saturday. There is plenty of room for movement on the leaderboard, with seven shots separating first place from third place and eight shots separating third place from fifth place.
