Colonels open SAA Championships in fifth place
DICKSON, Tenn. - The opening round of play at the Southern Athletic Association Men's Golf Championships has finished from Greystone G.C. and Centre College had a strong close to its opening round, moving from seventh to fifth on the back nine.
The Colonels sat in seventh place after 12 holes of play today, but stormed back in the final six holes to post a combined team score of 308, one shot back of Birmingham Southern and one shot up on Berry. Oglethorpe leads after Friday's competition, one shot up on Rhodes.
Individually, junior Jake Mattingly (Louisville, Ky.) was the low man of the day for Centre on Friday, shooting even par for the day with a score of 72. Mattingly had six birdies for the opening round, three on the front nine and three on the back, as he currently sits in a tie for fourth place overall.
The other Colonel golfer who ended up in the individual top 20 for the Friday round was junior Hans Stromberg (Lexington, Ky.), who finished with a score of 76. After a couple of early bogeys, Stromberg played his back nine at even par to finish just inside the top 20.
Seniors Andrew McKinney (Danville, Ky.) and Hall Rupert (Powells Point, N.C.) and junior Zach Mattingly (Louisville, Ky.) all finished with scores of 80. All three players had birdies in their final five holes to help the Colonels close the gap, with McKinney and Rupert each getting birdies on the 14th hole. Senior Will Hellman (Louisville, Ky.) rounded things off for Centre's Friday numbers with a score of 86.
