Centre men finish sixth at SAA Championships; Stromberg earns runner-up
DICKSON, Tenn. – The Centre men's golf team wrapped up play at the 2018 Southern Athletic Championships from Greystone G.C. and came away with a sixth place finish.
The Colonels shot a combined three-day score of 919 for the weekend after posting a score of 306 on the final day of play. Rhodes won this year's SAA championship on the men's side, with Oglethorpe and Sewanee tying for second.
Individually, junior Hans Stromberg (Lexington, Ky.) followed up his excellent round on Saturday with another one on Sunday, shooting 72 to go even par, including a pair of birdies on the back nine and an eagle on the par 5 ninth hole. Stromberg finished with a three-day score of 219 to finish in second place for the tournament, one shot back of Rhodes's Corrie Kuehn.
Senior Andrew McKinney (Danville, Ky.) finished with a score of 76 on Sunday, including a birdie on the par 4 18th hole. Senior Will Hellman (Louisville, Ky.) and junior Jake Mattingly (Louisville, Ky.) each posted Sunday scores of 79, with Hellman going one over par for his final nine holes. Mattingly's three-day score of 231 was the next lowest tournament total for the Colonels.
Senior Hall Rupert (Powells Point, N.C.) and junior Zach Mattingly (Louisville, Ky.) finished things off for the Colonels on Sunday with respective scores of 81 and 82. Mattingly tied with McKinney with a three-day score of 237, while Rupert played even par on his final nine holes of the day.
Stromberg earned first team All-SAA honors for his second place finish, the first All-Conference recognition of his collegiate career. He was also selected to represent Centre on the SAA Men's Golf All-Sportsmanship team.
