Men's lacrosse holds off Mount St. Joseph 13-10
Face Offs Won
Centre erased an early fourth quarter deficit to come away with a 13-10 victory over College of Mount St. Joseph in men's lacrosse action Wednesday at Farris Stadium.
The win avenged a 23-7 loss to Mount St. Joseph a year ago and improved the Colonels' record to 3-0 on the early season, already equaling the team's win total from 2011 in its first season of competition.
Five players scored multiple goals in the Colonels' balanced attack as Wesley Hardman (Narragansett, R.I.) led the squad with three while Scott Hughes (Chattanooga, Tenn.), Zack Connors (Louisville, Ky.), Connor Stubbs (Decatur, Ga.) and Peter Murphy (Louisville, Ky.) each found the net twice. Hughes led the Colonels with three assists.
Centre fell behind 3-0 over the first six minutes of the game before battling back on a Connors goal assisted by Hardman and a Hardman goal assisted by Hughes. The Lions' Ryan Gallagher scored to put his team up 4-2 at the end of the first quarter, but Centre responded by scoring the next five goals to go up 7-4 just before the half.
During that stretch, Sam Rush (Cornelius, N.C.) scored on an assist from Hughes, Murphy on an assist from Connors, and Stubbs scored two consecutive goals on assists from Connors and Murphy.
Though Centre held a three goal lead, Mount St. Joseph came all the way back with a goal by Cory Wojciechowski just before the half and five of the next six with Eric Gilligan (Cranston, R.I.) getting the Colonels' only score in the third quarter. Mount St. Joseph's run gave it a brief 9-8 lead with 7:46 to play, but Hardman tied the game on an assist from Hughes just 30 seconds later and the Colonels took the lead back for good on a Hughes goal assisted by Hughes at the 5:37 mark.
The Colonels went on to build a little breathing room when Hardman and Hughes scored unassisted goals to push the lead out to 12-9 with 3:29 to play. Chris Uselman, who led the Lions with three goals, scored to cut the lead to 12-10 with 2:33 remaining before Murphy finished off the scoring with another at the 2:00 mark.
Centre won the game despite being outshot 47-36. Colonels' goalie Clayton Brown (Louisville, Ky.) made 15 saves while Cody Nolan had 111 stops for Mount St. Joseph. Centre picked up 34 ground balls to the Lions' 19 and held a 15-11 advantage in face offs.
The Colonels are back in action at 2 p.m. Saturday at Farris Stadium.
