Centre men pull away from Millsaps for 23-8 win
The Centre men's lacrosse team rolled to a victory over Millsaps on Friday, reaching its highest offensive output of the season in a 23-8 win in a Southern Athletic Association game in Jackson, Miss.
In all, 14 players scored for the Colonels with five scoring multiple goals. Connor Stubbs (Decatur, Ga.) led the way with four goals and two assists while Sumner Franklin (Louisville, Ky.) and Aidan Leonard (Nashville, Tenn.) scored three each. Joey Lencewicz (Gates Mills, Ohio) and Conor Bennett (Alpharetta, Ga.) each scored twice.
Also scoring goals for Centre were Morgan Mayes (Prospect, Ky.), Eamon Delay (Hempstead, N.Y.), Matt Hughes (Vero Beach, Fla.), Patrick Vaughn (Signal Mountain, Tenn.), Corey Krill (Louisville, Ky.), Peter Murphy (Louisville, Ky.), Dustin Cowell (Culver, Ind.), Bryant Portwood (Charlotte, N.C.) and Austin Zehnder (Prospect, Ky.).
Centre scored five straight goals in the first quarter to go up 6-1 and continued to pull away from there. The Colonels held a 6-2 lead at the end of the first quarter, then went on to score 10 of the next 11 goals.
A late Millsaps goal made the halftime score 16-4, but the Colonels outscored the Majors 4-1 in the third quarter and scored the first two goals of the fourth quarter to take their biggest lead at 22-5.
Centre held wide edges in the statistical categories, taking 54 shots to Millsaps' 24 with a 50-35 advantage in ground balls and a 21-13 edge in face offs. Bryce McCoy (Hudson, Ohio) was one of four Colonels to see time in goal and led the team with four saves. Chris Hood made 10 stops for Millsaps.
The win improves Centre's reacord on the year to 5-3 overall and 2-1 in the SAA. Millsaps falls to 4-8 overall and 0-3 in the conference. The Colonels are back in action at Birmingham-Southern on Sunday.
