Men's lacrosse celebrates senior day with 19-4 win over Rhodes
Face Offs Won
The Centre men's lacrosse team was in dominant form on its senior day, cruising to a 19-4 win over Rhodes in a Southern Athletic Association game on Sunday in Danville, Ky.
The game was a milestone for the lacrosse program, as it was the final regular season game for 16 seniors who were among the team's first full recruiting class. The seniors were part of a group that went through the transition of being a new program to one that tied for the SAA regular season championship and reached the NCAA Tournament in 2013.
The seniors played an important role on Sunday as well, with Connor Stubbs (Decatur, Ga.) scoring five goals with one assist while goalie Clayton Brown (Louisville, Ky.) made seven saves and held the Lynx scoreless for the first three quarters of the game.
Overall, 10 Colonels scored in the game, with Joey Lencewicz (Gates Mills, Ohio) getting three goals and Wesley Hardman (Narragansett, R.I.), Austin Zehnder (Prospect, Ky.) and Sumner Franklin (Louisville, Ky.) scoring twice. Patrick Evans (Louisville, Ky.), Matt Hughes (Vero Beach, Fla.), Andrew Holmgren (Franklin, Tenn.), Corey Krill (Louisville, Ky.) and Lorenzo Powell (Seattle, Wash.) all scored single goals while Peter Murphy (Louisville, Ky.) had a game-high three assists.
With Brown and the defense shutting the Lynx out for the first 46 minutes of the game, the Colonels left little doubt about the outcome. Centre scored five goals in the first quarter and another five in the second quarter to take a 10-0 lead to halftime. The Colonels scored another five goals in the third quarter to go up 15-0 before Kevin Vieira got Rhodes on the board with 13:51 left in the game.
Centre answered with a Lencewicz goal to go back up 16-1, and though Rhodes scored the next three, Centre answered with three more over the final three minutes to arrive at the final total of 19-4.
For the game, Centre outshot Rhodes 45-29. Centre forced Rhodes into 39 turnovers with Will Elpers (Louisville, Ky.) leading the team with four caused turnovers.
Centre wraps up the regular season at 10-3 overall and 6-1 in the SAA while Rhodes finishes at 7-9 overall with a 1-6 conference record. The Colonels earn the second seed in the SAA Tournament and will host seventh-seeded Rhodes in a quarterfinal game Saturday at noon.
