Men’s lacrosse wins 4th straight, 19-4 over Millsaps
Face Offs Won
The Centre men's lacrosse team improved to 3-1 in Southern Athletic Association play with its biggest victory of the season, a 19-4 win over the Millsaps Majors in Farris Stadium. The win was the Colonels' fourth consecutive after a 2-4 start to the season.
Seth Gray (Louisville, Ky.) paced the Colonels with five goals in the contest while Sam Rush (Cornelius, N.C.) added four goals and Dominic Peluso (Redondo Beach, Calif.) scored three times. The Colonels assisted on 14 of the team's 19 goals, with Gray, Peluso and Austin Zehnder (Prospect, Ky.) leading the way with two assists while eight different players each recorded one assist.
The key to the game was a high-powered offensive burst in the first half, the best opening half of the season for the Colonels. The goals came quickly and early for the Colonels in the first quarter. Seth Gray, Sam Rush, Mason Paas (Louisville, Ky.), Bryant Portwood (Charlotte, N.C.) and Lorenzo Powell (Newcastle, Wash.) all scored goals in the opening period and Gray, Dominic Peluso, Dustin Cowell (Culver, Ind.) and Phil Havira (Louisville, Ky.) recorded assists in a dominant 6-1 first quarter.
The second quarter was even better for the Colonels as they outscored the Majors 7-1. Seth Gray added three more goals, while Austin Zehnder scored both of his goals in the period. Additional goals were put in by Mason Paas and Robert Anthony (Louisville, Ky.) and Matt Hughes (Vero Beach, Fla.) and Connor Thuss (Ridgefield, Conn.) each got onto the board with assists as the Colonels entered halftime with a 13-2 lead.
The goals did not come as often for the Colonels in the second half, but the defense held strong, only allowing a pair of Millsaps goals in the final two quarters. All three of Dominic Peluso's goals came in the second half with assists by Seth Gray, Robert Anthony and Eamon DeLay (Hempstead, N.Y.). Bryce McCoy (Hudson, Ohio) played all 60 minutes in goal and stopped 11 out of 15 Millsaps shots. Joe Mizhir (Wichendon, Mass.) recorded nine of Centre's 14 faceoff wins. The Colonels outshot the Majors 51-30, held a 39-22 advantage in ground balls and forced twice as many turnovers as they committed.
The next game for the Centre men's lacrosse team will be the regular season home finale as they host Transylvania on April 1st in a Wednesday night showdown.
