Men's lacrosse comes from behind to top Transy 12-9

The Centre men's lacrosse team overcame a three-goal second half deficit to pull ahead for a 12-9 win over rival Transylvania in the team's final regular season home game Wednesday at Farris Stadium.

The Colonels found themselves trailing 8-5 after two Transylvania goals early in the second half, but Centre dominated play from that point forward. The Colonels outscored the Pioneers 7-1 over the final 23 minutes of play, while holding a 20-13 edge in shots and a 19-9 advantage in ground balls over the second half.

Eight different players scored in Centre's balanced attack, led by Sam Rush (Cornelius, N.C.) with three goals. Lorenzo Powell (Newcastle, Wash.) and Matt Hughes (Vero Beach, Fla.) each scored twice, while Dominic Peluso (Redondo Beach, Calif.), Austin Zehnder (Prospect, Ky.), Seth Gray (Louisville, Ky.), Conor Bennett (Alpharetta, Ga.), and Dustin Cowell (Culver, Ind.) all scored single goals. Transylvania's Clay Douthat led all players with five goals.

The teams played an evenly matched first quarter, finishing the period tied at 2-2, but the Pioneers, who have never beaten Centre in men's lacrosse, stunned the Colonels with three goals in a span of 1:25 early in the second quarter. Centre got all three of the goals from Rush over the final nine minutes of the first half, eventually cutting the margin to 6-5 when Rush scored on an assist from Cowell with just nine seconds left before halftime.

The Pioneers pushed their lead back out to three with two goals to open the third quarter, but Centre seized the momentum from that point. The Colonels scored four straight goals to take the lead back at 9-8 on a Hughes goal at the 3:56 mark, but Douthat's fifth goal tied the score at the end of the third quarter. The fourth quarter went scoreless for the first five minutes, but Centre was able to pull ahead with scores by Hughes and Cowell just 13 seconds apart. A goal from Gray, the reigning Southern Athletic Association Player of the Week, gave the Colonels some breathing room with five minutes remaining.

For the game, Transylvania led in shots (33-32) and faceoffs (15-9), while Centre had the edge in ground balls (33-24), turnovers (23-18), and was a perfect 18-of-18 on clear attempts. Bryce McCoy (Hudson, Ohio) made nine saves in goal in the victory, while Cooper Fogle had six stops in a losing effort for Transylvania.

With its fifth straight win, Centre improves to 7-4 on the year, while Transylvania falls to 4-5 with the loss. The Colonels return to SAA play this weekend when they travel to Rhodes on Friday.
