Men's lacrosse picks up sixth straight win at Rhodes

The Centre men's lacrosse team controlled second half play in pulling away for a 15-7 victory over Rhodes in a Southern Athletic Association game Friday in Memphis, Tenn.

Led by three goals each from Matt Hughes (Vero Beach, Fla.) and Conor Bennett (Alpharetta, Ga.), the Colonels cruised to the victory. Ten different players scored for Centre, with Seth Gray (Louisville, Ky.) scoring twice, and Robert Anthony (Louisville, Ky.), Dominic Peluso (Redondo Beach, Calif.) Austin Zehnder (Prospect, Ky.), Mason Paas (Louisville, Ky.), Lorenzo Powell (Newcastle, Wash.), Sam Rush (Cornelius, N.C.), and Dustin Cowell (Culver, Ind.) scoring single goals.

It was a close game most of the way, with Centre taking 34 shots to Rhodes' 33 and putting 27 on goal to 15 for the Lynx. The teams were tied 2-2 at the end of the first quarter, but Centre outscored the Lynx 6-3 over the second period.

The Colonels would go on to pull away over the second half after Powell and Hughes scored the first two goals. A Justin Powers goal late in the third quarter pulled the Lynx to within 10-6, but Centre scored the first four goals of the final quarter to put the game away.

Rhodes held the edge in faceoff wins (16-10) and ground balls (15-10), but the Colonels were able to pull away with their strong second half performance. Bryce McCoy (Hudson, Ohio) made eight saves in goal for Centre, while Thomas Matthews had 10 stops in the loss for Rhodes.

With its sixth straight win, Centre improves to 8-4 overall and 4-1 in SAA play. Rhodes drops to 8-3 overall and 2-3 on the season. The Colonels wrap up regular season competition with a trip to Hendrix on Sunday.
